I am a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, and Director of the Behavioral Health & Wellness Program and interdisciplinary Wellness Leadership Institute. At the CU School of Medicine, I have led a number of initiatives to study and implement effective organizational, psychosocial, and pharmacologic wellness strategies across the age range. As the Vice President of Spark Inspiration, I also create corporate wellness solutions. I have had the privilege of providing clinical, public policy and program evaluation consultation across more than 30 states and internationally.

Cindy Morris, PsyD – Clinical Director

I am a clinical psychologist and the Clinical Director at the Behavioral Health and Wellness Program at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, School of Medicine. As Clinical Director at BHWP, I direct the Wellness Leadership Institute though which we offer many training programs and educational resources for administrators, healthcare providers, and peer specialists focused on health behavior change for whole health, work & well-being, tobacco cessation, and weight management.

Kathie Garrett, MA – Clinical Associate

I am a Clinical Associate in the Behavioral Health and Wellness Program and a Research Senior Instructor in the Colorado School of Public Health. I am also a Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist and member of the International Motivational Interviewing (MI) Network of Trainers. My research interests include applied models of behavior change, motivational interviewing, and coping mechanisms across a wide range of chronic illnesses.

Mary Mancuso, MA – Clinical Associate

As a Clinical Associate at BHWP, I am involved in content and training material development, training initiatives, including providing ongoing support for trainees, and I also participate in several BHWP research initiatives. My background is varied and includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Portland, a Master’s Degree in Humanities from the University of Chicago, and a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from Pacific University.

Susan Young, PhD – Research Director

I earned my doctorate in psychology from the University of Colorado at Boulder, Institute for Behavioral Genetics in 1998. My training centered on psychiatric genetics and biometrical research methods. Over the past 15 years, I have focused my research on adolescent-onset neurobehavioral disorders with core features consisting of impulsivity, risk taking, and excessive reward seeking. Early deficits in these behavioral control mechanisms often lead to persistent substance abuse problems and an array of psychosocial, educational, and financial difficulties later in life.

Christine Garver-Apgar, PhD – Research Associate

I earned my doctorate in experimental psychology from the University of New Mexico in 2008 and subsequently completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Institute for Behavioral Genetics in 2011. I then served as the senior statistician for a research group within the Department of Psychiatry at Anschutz Medical School until 2014.

Ashley Kayser, MA – Research Assistant

I am a senior professional research assistant at the University of Colorado Denver and the community liaison administrator with the Behavioral Health and Wellness Program. I earned a bachelor’s degree from Colgate University and a master’s in environmental policy and management from the University of Denver. A relatively new addition to the BWHP team, I have so far assisted with NIH grant submissions, training coordination, and report preparation. My role will be expanding to assist the community liaisons with their day-to-day activities.

I joined BHWP in the fall of 2013 and I am excited to continue working in an endeavor I began as an undergraduate, helping connect underserved populations to the knowledge and services they need to live rich, healthy, and fulfilling lives. I received a BA in International Studies, Spanish and Philosophy from Indiana University before going on to enroll in a Masters program in International Relations at the University of Indianapolis.

Jamie Pfahl – Community Liaison

As a community liaison with the Behavioral Health and Wellness Program, I am responsible for coordinating and leading wellness trainings and providing technical assistance throughout Colorado and nationally. This work focuses on tobacco cessation and weight management through health behavior change and a holistic perspective on wellness.

Derek Noland, MPH – Community Liaison

As a Community Liaison at the Behavioral Health and Wellness Program, I am involved in numerous different projects. Among my responsibilities are assisting local organizations to enhance the tobacco cessation services they offer, overseeing our work with vulnerable populations, and assisting with the provision of technical assistance throughout Colorado. In addition, I help to coordinate and lead wellness trainings locally and nationally, and support the development of our training materials and research.

I joined the Behavioral Health and Wellness Program in 2008 as the manager of business and information technology, but recently my position evolved into BHWP’s Administrative Director. Sara Mumby – Program Administrator

I joined the Behavioral Health and Wellness Program in early 2013. I earned my bachelor’s degree in English literature from the University of Colorado Boulder. I manage all administrative duties including human resources activities, expense reporting, and other daily operations. I assist with program development and resource production through content development, research, editing, formatting, and design.
