I am a clinical psychologist and the Clinical Director for the Behavioral Health and Wellness Program (BHWP) the Wellness Leadership Institute at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, School of Medicine. I have developed many training programs and educational materials for administrators, healthcare providers, and peer specialists focused on health behavior change for whole health, work & well-being, and tobacco cessation. I also work with organizations to create systems that support the overall health of the organization, its employees, and the people they serve.
I am a certified trainer and member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), an international organization committed to promoting high-quality Motivational Interviewing practice and training. In 2016, I created the Motivational Interviewing Training Institute at the University of Colorado, School of Medicine, providing over 25 intensive beginning and advanced Motivational Interviewing (MI) trainings for healthcare professionals. Across the course of my career, I have taught hundreds of trainees and students to work from an MI approach through MI courses, trainings, supervision, and coaching. I have also developed and facilitated specialized MI trainings for diverse settings, including medical, community health, behavioral health, and criminal justice, among others.
No matter the starting point, I believe that all people have the potential and desire to live well. For many, it’s about having access to information and resources. For others, it’s about practicing new skills and building new habits. It doesn’t matter if the person is a healthcare provider or a patient, we all need to be mindful about our health behaviors in order to make the conscious decision each day to be well. Awareness is a solid first step. I feel deep appreciation for the opportunity I have to facilitate this process through my work at BHWP. It is a pleasure and a privilege.
